Victoria | Lego Elvis is in the building

The Elvis aircrane made a special appearance inside Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building last weekend where it was viewed by about 20,000 people attending Brickvention, Australia’s premier Lego fan convention.

Over four metres in length and made of more than 100,000 Lego blocks, Elvis is the creation of Lego certified professional Ryan McNaught.

“We were trying to come up with something that captured Melbourne summer and it was the MCG or Elvis,” says Ryan. “The thought of putting all the people together to fill the MCG made me think that Elvis was a better idea! He’s on every news bulletin so everyone knows him.”

Ryan got started on the design by downloading numerous photos of Elvis and watching video footage. “I’m a 3-D model designer,” he explains. “There’s a lot of maths involved in large-scale Lego models. I spent a few days doing sketches, maths calculations and scale drawings. You make a few mistakes in the building process.”

Ryan has worked full time for three years as a contractor to Lego. “Eighty per cent of the work I do is for Lego,” he says. “I make the big Lego models you might see in shop windows and store displays.

“Lego has about 10,000 staff around the world. I have one boss in the US and one boss in Denmark and do a lot of travel. It’s a great job. I’m not complaining.”
